Dear Editor:
Our senators, fully aware of the unconstitutionality of restricting speech are debating a proposal that would have killed the entire McCain-Feingold bill if any provision of it is found unconstitutional. Instead the Senate should be trying to pass constitutional laws. Our nation's leaders have taken an oath to uphold the constitution, yet they knowingly pass laws that are unconstitutional. Do only Libertarians know how to read the constitution? This bill goes beyond control of campaign funding by limiting spending on "issue ads". The Supreme Court has agreed in its 1976 decision in Buckley v. Valeo that any attempt at limiting speech beyond campaign funding is unconstitutional. Clearly, better government reform can be achieved by limiting government involvement in our lives to those granted by our constitution.
