The West Long Branch Borough Council is wrong in trying to legislate a gun shop out of business. Their premise is that this lawful business theatens schoolchildren. The rash of school shootings has nothing to do with licensed gun dealers. Guns are more readily available to children in a home than in a firearms shop.
Do the town leaders think children will stroll into this gun shop and purchase firearms there to shoot their classmates? No. It is much easier to obtain a gun from a home, where a gun is not locked up.
A law against a gun shop within 1,000 feet of a school is trifling. We cannot dumb down the business community to the level of a playground for every overblown "crisis."
The shop owner has the right to run his business in a responsible manner. They are turning the legal into the illegal to suit their political careers. By doing that they are treating us all like schoolchildren and not as responsible adults and business people.
Responsibility is key. If we want our children to treat each other with respect, we must take the initiative and respect each other. Teach them that lashing out in anger is wrong. Guns are not toys. Life isn't that terrible.
The gun shop is not the problem. The West Long Branch Borough Council needs to realize that.
