One of the easiest ways to gain publicity for the Libertarian Party, or for a specific issue or candidate, is by writing a letter to the editor. It's even easier when you use E-mail. Below is a list of Monmouth County newspapers. Unless otherwise specified, address your letter: Attn.: Letters to the Editor. Here are other useful guidelines:
General Guidelines
1. Use your full name and address and provide the newspaper with a telephone number for verification purposes. (They won't print your street address or phone number.) If you send your letter regular mail be sure to sign it.
2. When using regular mail, type the letter double-spaced or print neatly. If they can't read it they won't run it.
3. Keep it short. Most newspapers will restrict you to no more than 500 words; aim for 300.
4. Always mention either the Libertarian Party or the words libertarian or libertarianism.
5. Address only one topic per letter.
6. Do not flood any one newspaper with letters. Most will accept only one letter per month from the same individual.
7. Be temperate in your language. Your goal is to sound rational and logical.
8. Write to a newspaper that covers your community, and if at all possible tie your letter in to a specific article or editorial that appeared in that newspaper.
9. Pick a timely, interesting topic. If you're responding to something you saw in print, respond quickly.
10. Some papers restrict letters in support of candidates just prior to the
election. Don't wait until the last minute to send them.
The following dailies cover at least part of Monmouth County. Other metropolitan dailies do so as well, but it is far more difficult to place a letter in their columns.
