Monmouth County Freeholders have committed up to $30,000 of your tax money to buy unwanted guns from the public. They've been at it since March. And since March, the Monmouth County Libertarian Party has been protesting this waste of taxpayer dollars.
What's wrong with spending a little money to keep guns off the street? Isn't this a great way to promote public safety and even reduce crime?
Actually, no.
Put simply and bluntly, no criminal will voluntarily turn in his gun anymore than a carpenter would turn in his hammer. Its one of the tools of his trade. Even if he had an extra, unwanted firearm, he'd simply sell it on the street at a higher price and without having to deal with the police. In fact, any citizen who wanted to dispose of a working gun could easily sell it to a gun shop or private dealer at a better price than what the Freeholders are offering.
But the problem goes well beyond this. The Freeholders are sending a message that guns are evil and must be removed from the public's hands, even if we have to, in effect, bribe them to surrender them.
The truth is that guns are the ultimate guarantee of our Liberty. Every dictator that has arisen in human history has sought to disarm his subjects. The Second Amendment was not placed in the Constitution to protect the rights of hunters, gun collectors or target shooters, although it does all those things. It was included to protect us, the people, against a government that might turn on us.
The Founding Fathers had been taught a hard lesson from their former British masters. Our modern desire for peace, and our abhorrence of the violence that seemingly permeates America, makes it understandable that many today are willing to ignore that lesson. But we do so at our own peril.
