Many media outlets have mistakenly been reporting that Joseph Lieberman is the first Jewish person to have run for the office of Vice President of the United States. This is simply not true.
Tonie Nathan was the Libertarian Party's Vice Presidential candidate in 1972. Not only is Nathan Jewish, Nathan is a woman, and was the first woman to win a vote in the Electoral College, beating Geraldine Ferraro by 12 years.
The lack of media attention was probably due to 1972 being the first Presidential election for the Libertarian Party. The Libertarian Party is now the third largest party in America with 166 members holding elected positions, more than all other alternative parties combined. It is also running more candidates for office this year than all other alternative parties combined.
The Libertarian Party is on the ballot in all 50 states for the third Presidential election in a row and is contesting for a majority of seats in the U.S. House and Senate up for election - something that no other alternative party has done since 1920.
The Libertarian Party is a party of principle, a party of "firsts," and a party on the rise that believes in personal freedom and dramatically reducing the size of government.
